Food Dogs Should Not Eat

11/19/2015

The holidays are coming around and for most of us that means that our house will be full of food! That is why everyone gains weight during the holidays. But it also means that our house will be full of toxic food for dog! Below is a list of foods in general that dogs cannot eat. I will also be uploading a video soon to my youtube channel for more pet safety during the holidays.

Alcohol is should never be given to a dog. This can cause vomiting, loss of coordination and if too much is ingested it can lead to seizures, coma and death.

Avocados are toxic to most pets. Dogs should never eat avocados as the skin, leaves, seeds and bark can be toxic to them. Ingesting the pit of the avocado will cause obstruction of the digestive track and the dog should be taken to the vet immediately.

Chocolate is poisonous to dogs and could cause vomiting, irregular heart rhythm, high blood pressure, seizures and death.

Garlic can cause a dog’s kidney and liver damage.

Mushrooms can be very toxic to a dog’s organs because of the toxicity.

Onions can damage a dog’s red blood cells.

Raw Dough for bread or cookies can be harmful to dogs and could cause vomiting and problems breathing.

Xylitol found in sugar free products is very harmful to dogs and can cause liver failure.

Keep your pets safe this holiday season and don’t be tempted to “share” with them. If you aren’t sure if the food is safe for dogs, then don’t feed it. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

DIY Rat Toys

Rats are super intelligent animals that need to be kept busy. But that doesn’t mean rat toys need to take a big bite out of your wallet. Here are some ways to make cheap, inexpensive rat toys that will your pets will love.

Treat Bottle

Take an empty water bottle and make a whole in the bottom to fit a stick though. Tie a knot at the end of the string to keep that end of slipping out. The rest of the string (a few inches) should be hanging outside of the bottom of the bottle to be able to hang the bottle upside down. Then take treats such as peanuts, sunflower seeds and anything else your rats like, and put a few in the bottle. Then stuff the bottle with tissue and leave a few pieces hanging outside the bottle neck. Hang the bottle upside down in the cage and watch as they pullout the paper for treats!

Scavenge Box

Take a small container and fill it with small rocks and twigs. Take small treats such as seeds and other small snacks and sprinkle them though thought the box letting them fall in between the rocks. Place the container in the cage and let them scavenge through it!

Fishing Dish

Take a shallow dish and fill it with water. Cut up pieces of fruit or other treats that will float and place them in the water. Place the dish in the cage on a hot day and let the rats play in the water fishing out the treats!

Play Tunnels

Rats love to run though hides while playing. Tunnels can be made from PVC pipes (as long as they are large enough) or just construction paper with glue. Construction paper tunnels will be destroyed easier but will give your rat entertainment while they last!

Try these out and let me know what your rats like!

Natural Remedies for Coughing and Congestion

As the weather is getting colder, our dogs could be more prone to having coughs and other respiratory problems. I like to always try natural remedies with my pets before giving them medication. So here is how I would treat a cough.

I always keep Marshmallow tea on hand for any respiratory problem. It not only works for humans but for dogs as well. Prepare warm water and allow the Marshmallow leaves to set in the water for about 15 min. Then remove the leaves and let the dog drink the water. This will relieve their cough and clear out the lungs.
If they cough is especially bad, add a big spoonful of honey to the marshmallow tea. Honey is an antibiotic that can be used to treat bacteria, but honey can be wonderful for coughs because it soothes the throat.

If your dog is not too keen on drinking this, add a low sodium chick broth to it. It is always better to make your own chicken broth by boiling chicken at home. This usually does the trick and the dogs are happy to lap it up.

Potty Training Dogs and Puppies

11/2/2015

One of the most important things to teach your new dog is where a good place to relieve himself is. Obviously none of us want our dog to potty anywhere they feel like it. So training is super important. And it’s also a lot easier than most people think.

Whether you have a new puppy or adopted an older dog that is not potty trained, both can be trained the same way. So follow these steps below.
Picture
To teach your dog you are going to keep him in a crate for most of the time during the first week. Crates are not bad. A lot of people think that it is sad to have a dog in a crate. To dogs a crate is a safe place.
In the morning take your dog out of the crate and put a leash on him, immediately taking him to a designated pooping place. This needs to be the same location where the dog will poop and pee every time. A patch of grass will work.

I do not recommend using puppy pads. This can be confusing to the dog. Most dogs will not know the difference between puppy pads and carpets. Dogs should be trained to go to the restroom outside of the house.
Once the dog as done his business he should be rewarded. A reward can be lots of praise and attention or a doggie treat.

After this go back in the house and allow the dog to spend a few minutes walking around the house. Then the dog should be put back in the crate.

Let the dog out of the crate again to eat and take him outside immediately after he finishes his food. Take him to the spot where he can relieve himself to see if he needs to go again and praise him if he does.
Take him back into the house and put him back in the crate.

Repeat this at dinner time and throughout the day.

During this week the dog should only be allowed to be out of the crate if he has gone to the restroom outside and if someone is going to keep a very close eye on him, mainly interacting with him. When training my dogs, I will keep them on a leash next to meet to make sure they do not try to go to the restroom in the house.
If your dog does have an accident, only pushes them if you catch them in the act. If you catch them peeing, pick them up, firmly say no and take them out to where they are supposed to poop.
Watch your dog closely for signs that they might need to poop or pee. If they are whining or scratching at the crate they may need to go outside. They may also want to just play in the house. But it is very important to not let them have free range of the house during this training period. Fewer accidents and more consistency will help you keep your dog from having any accidents in the future.
