DIY Rat Toys

Rats are super intelligent animals that need to be kept busy. But that doesn’t mean rat toys need to take a big bite out of your wallet. Here are some ways to make cheap, inexpensive rat toys that will your pets will love.

Treat Bottle

Take an empty water bottle and make a whole in the bottom to fit a stick though. Tie a knot at the end of the string to keep that end of slipping out. The rest of the string (a few inches) should be hanging outside of the bottom of the bottle to be able to hang the bottle upside down. Then take treats such as peanuts, sunflower seeds and anything else your rats like, and put a few in the bottle. Then stuff the bottle with tissue and leave a few pieces hanging outside the bottle neck. Hang the bottle upside down in the cage and watch as they pullout the paper for treats!

Scavenge Box

Take a small container and fill it with small rocks and twigs. Take small treats such as seeds and other small snacks and sprinkle them though thought the box letting them fall in between the rocks. Place the container in the cage and let them scavenge through it!

Fishing Dish

Take a shallow dish and fill it with water. Cut up pieces of fruit or other treats that will float and place them in the water. Place the dish in the cage on a hot day and let the rats play in the water fishing out the treats!

Play Tunnels

Rats love to run though hides while playing. Tunnels can be made from PVC pipes (as long as they are large enough) or just construction paper with glue. Construction paper tunnels will be destroyed easier but will give your rat entertainment while they last!

Try these out and let me know what your rats like!

bottle one sounds stupid, the rocks and sunflower seeds will only entertain one of my rats because the other one doesn't like them

I found the bottle one to be cool. I didn't put treats in mine, but my rats had a fun time ripping out the tissues and putting them in their little house.

The bottle one was a favorite for my rats. They all loved to shred the paper and the treats were just an added bonus. Also it was easy for me because it was so cheap.
