Pigs are NOT vegetarians. Theyre omnivores. So, not, you should not feed them only veg. Meats and fruits are excellent for them. Also, your list of toxic foods is completely wrong. None of those things are toxic to pigs. If fed in large quantities, acorns can cause some issues, but they would need to be eating pounds of them every day for a long period. Where on earth did you get your information?? It certainly wasnt from anyone who knows anything about pigs and their needs!

I was told pigs especially Potbelly pigs should NEVER have animal byproducts. Also I was taught a lil garlic in their food was excellent for parasites and flax seed is good for their skin.

I agree, I read the list and went what? I spent a lot of my youth around people with livestock and never heard any of this. I get that food for livestock and food for pets is not always the same but the people I knew were never uncaring about their animals. Also I thought Acorn finished pork was an actual thing. I think I would take this list with a grain of salt with the exception of the "other Items to Avoid" column. Also don't they use pigs to hunt for truffles and aren't truffles a fungus like a mushroom. If the pig can't eat them why would it look for them at the behest of a human or not?

That depends on where you are in the world.Where we are ,in Australia,It is illegal to feed pigs any foods that contain meat, meat products or any other products from mammals or that may have been in contact with them.

Illegal pig feeds include:

*food scraps and wastes from:-
*kitchen scraps
*processors and manufacturers
*food retailers including supermarkets and bakeries
*hotels, restaurants, cafés, fast food outlets, delicatessens, lunch *bars
*rubbish dumps
*used cooking oil, unless it has been treated to the required standard
*offal
*blood, bones, carcasses from mammals.
*any food that is served on the same plate or that has come into contact with meat is prohibited feed
*Dairy products from overseas are also banned.
*salad and vegetables that has been served with meat.
*butcher's shop waste.
*pies, pasties, deli foods – including bacon, cheese (from overseas) and salads that contain meat

Our pigs eat meat but my pet pig got awfully sick on avocados (and not a lot of it either). She came right after not eating for a week or so but only having black coffee and electrolytes pumped into her stomach. Was scary but a lesson learnt that pigs can not just eat anything. I would advise to always research if you are u sure before feeding them and also keep in mind it is better to be safe than sorry. Think about what they would naturally forage for in the wild.

I think she knows what she is doing, she has so many animals and I think she is amazing with them and knowing how to care for them. I do not have a mini pig, but I trust her with all of her animal instructions. If she is right, or made a mistake, please do not correct people. She was just trying to help and is doing no harm to mini pig owners. Meghan, thank you for all of your help, my Meyer part is a lot happier and healthier now that I got most of her seeds out of her diet. -Ava <3

Wow! Do not correct someone?? How else is someone supposed to learn if not corrected? I would rather be corrected than go through life with people thinking I was daft and ignorant. How old are you? Learn by your mistakes not by following blindly.

pig has gotten fat quick. I’m not sure why. He’s about 4 months old. He didn’t have a belly but now it’s huge. He gets about 1/2 cup of mini pig food 2 times a day. I can’t think of anything else causing it besides he has eaten the chicken scratch a few times. ( i heard that could be bad)

This list is 100% wrong. My vet WHO WENT TO SCHOOL TO TAKE CARE OF ANIMALS, said and I quote, "All fruits and Veggies, cooked or raw are safe for pot bellies as long as they're washed. Same for beans and any other natural food that isn't a processed item or chalked full of animal by products." He also said, "Use flax seed for her skin health since she is mostly outdoors exposed to the sunlight, be sure to toss a little garlic or light onion into her food to keep parasites away, and to be sure to research the options from this list of the kinds of meats that are safe for their diets." So, whomever corrected this woman is correct according to a medical professional.

Aloha! Unfortunately a lot of your not eat list are wrong. Really the biggest no-no is raw meat and uncooked tubers. Those two items are even questionable. You should really modify your list. It's incorrect information.

Yes.. check out Justin Rhodes on YouTube. He feeds his pigs the left over skin from when they seperate their cows milk... as well as the milk that has potentially been contaminated while milking

You can feed pigs a human body and they can eat it like nothing. Your knowledge of pigs are terrible. Im 100% sure you’re vegan feeding your poor dog vegan food instead of meat.

I disagree with everything on the toxic list. My pigs are healthy and happy to prove it. In fact, boiled and mashed rhubarb stalk mixed with stale bread and a dash of maple syrup is their favorite treat. I've heard they can't eat the onion skins because they don't break it down but the flesh is fine. Basically, my rule is don't give anything that's toxic or inedible for us to the pigs like rhubarb leaves, banana peels, toxic mushrooms etc. I avoid any ornamental stuff like flowers and shrubs from the flower beds because who knows. Also no coffee grounds, egg shells or meat, they're harmless but it's just my preference. Yes, cook the taters. However I've yet to meet a pig that will eat raw potatoes or peels unless they're pretty hungry. The "Other items to avoid list" is just common sense. May as well tell us not to feed them gasoline. Folks, this is misinformation and it's a shame this site hits so high on google. Don't take advice on the dietary requirements for pigs from someone who practices holistic medicine. It's a quack pseudoscience that has costed the lives of people I know.

No banana peels? Can you please tell me why? I actually had some for my Nigerian Dwarf goats but they didn't eat them. My pot belly/Juliana 2 girls sure did though. They really like bananas and the peels. I love my girls and would not give anything to harm them. Please enlighten me.

You people claiming "my pig ate meat! This isn't true!" Are idiots. Just because they WILL eat it doesnt mean they SHOULD eat it. You will eat all kinds of junk you shouldnt eat I'm sure.

Hello Everyone :) I , and my Fiance are looking to buy a home in the next few months in a Rural Area. It has always been a wish of mine to own a Pot Bellied Pig. I heard they are highly intelligent and make great pets, and have been researching what to feed them, general needs/ care etc. After seeing all of this contradictery posts , I have to say...I'm Flippin confused! LOL...Does anyone have any good advice for me, without me having to contact a Veterinarian right off the bat? I'm thinking CLEARLY Raw fruits and veggies, a special suppliment maybe?? And piggy food specific to the breed with all the essential stuff from a place such as Tractor Supply etc. that carries these types of items? I know I sound dumb, but I just want to get a good head start on my knowledge before I take on the responsibility. Are Pot Bellied Pigs different than ...say a Farm pig that will eventually become bacon? I know that sounds idiotic, but I would think that if it's healthy food for us, it would be OK for a pig. Clearly, I wouldn't feed him pizza lol... but are there severly TOXIC veggies/fruits they can't eat. This whole post is so damn confusing! Thanks Y'all , and Blessins from TX

Well I'm in Canada. I own a Vietnamese pot belly, he is now nine months old. He weighs close to one hundred lbs. As far as what to feed him, one cop of grains in the morning at five, a small bowl of cooked oats later in the morning. At four he gets cut up cucumber, baby carrots and a few cherry tomatoes. Grains again at bedtime . Clyde is also given an enrichment ball, full of sunflower seeds to roll around, to enrich his day with an activity. Walks are on a harness and leash. Loves routine, and quickly learns routine. Sleeps with a blanket, on a dog bed . Sleeps inside at night, and stays in his big enclosure during the warm sunny days. I apply fps 60 sunscreen when going outside. Winter time coconut oil is applied when his skin gets dry in the winter months while inside for the most part, only to be out during cold snaps. Thanks for taking the time to read my comment.
